Large transport critical currents across boundaries in artificially joined large-grain YBCO

Large-grain melt-processed YBCO has been joinedto create nominally 'zero-angle' grain boundaries. Similarbroadening of the resistive transition in both grains and theartificial boundary is observed in transport measurements up to 7T. Direct and pulsed currents are used to obtain the high-fieldvoltage-current characteristics which display power-law behaviour.The temperature and field dependence of the critical current in theboundary compares well with that of the grain material. The largecritical current densities, above 2000 A cm~-2 at 77 K for 4 T || c-axis, show great promise for the joining technology to producelarge-scale engineering artefacts.
