Fraser sockeye: DFO is cautiously optimistic that the Fraser River sockeye run will be in the neighborhood of 23 million fish in 2014.The science branch has forecast a broad range of anywhere from 7.3 million to 72.3 million fish coming back, with 23 million in the mid-range of that forecast.Les Jantz, DFO's area director for the interior, said that there is a high level of uncertainty about this year's run because the very large spawning escapements associated with the historic high returns in the brood year 2010 are well outside the rangeof the historical data used to make forecasts.The run size in 2010 was 28.36 million, with 13.1 million spawners assessed on the ground."That is the largest escapement we have recorded information for," Jantz said, explaining that the Adams River component is the dominant cycle for the 2010-2014 run.
