In the reds: When it comes to salmon, the sockeye is Alaska's money fish. And the outlook is good for another rich crop of reds this year, based on state forecasts issued by press time. At the famed Copper River, source of the earliest major crop of sockeye each season, commercial gillnetters can expect a catch of 1.18 million sockeye. If the forecast holds true, the harvest will be a big improvement over the lackluster 635,968 sockeye caught in the Copper River District in 2010. In Upper Cook Inlet, state biologists predict a total harvest for all user groups of 4.4 million to 4.8 million sockeye, with commercial gillnetters expected to take most of the fish. Last year's tally for all user groups was 3.6 million.
