Thus, the F/V Alaska Ranger sank on Easter morning 2008. Five men died and, if not for miraculous good luck and heroism on the part of the Coast Guard, many others would have perished as well. All because watertight doors were left unlatched. The National Transportation Safety Board agreed: "The probable cause of the sinking of the Alaska Ranger was uncontrolled, progressive flooding due to a lack of internal watertight integrity." That tragedy, and many others like it, have led to a monitoring system that will allow the wheelhouse to know which doors are open and which are closed and dogged down.
