Have you heard of "Nagano"? Many people are probably familiar with place names like Lillehammer, Albertville and Calgary. What does Nagano have in common with these cities? The 1998 Olympic Winter Games will be held there. Nagano is located near the center of the Japanese archipelago, some 220 kilometers from Tokyo. The ranges of 2,000 to 3,000-meter-high mountains surrounding it are often called the "roof of Japan." Blessed with cool summer temperatures in the highlands and heavy snowfall in winter,Nagano has developed into a major resort area. Winter sports have been popular in Nagano for a long time; its ski slopes attract nearly 20 million visitors a year. At this Japanese mecca for winter sports, the 18th Winter Olympics will open on February7, 1998, with about 3,000 athletes and officials participating from over 60 countries and regions.
