摘要

Every form of modern mass media, including newspapers, television and magazines, engages in a feverish competition in dispatching news about the Paris Collection held twice a year. The history of modern fashion in the world dates mainly to Paris of the late 19th century. The first Asian designers to be recognized in Paris were Japanese like Kenzo Takada and Issey Miyake who debuted in the 1970s. They presented original Western-style clothes entirely different from those of European designers — and gained widespread recognition. When the 1980s came along, Rei Kawakubo, Yoji Yamamoto and others joined the Parisian circle of Japanese designers, generating a boom in the fashion worlds of both Europe and the United States. This boom occurred against thebackground of the fast-growing Japanese textile industry and Japan's rising economic strength, which apparently contributed to the recognition of Japanese fashion. It was also helped along by the fact that the 1970s was a transitional period when the Paris Collection was changing from haute couture (high fashion) to the more affordable pret-a-porter (ready-to-wear).
