摘要

As the population of Japan keeps on shifting to the cities, depopulation continues apace in secluded places in the mountains and on isolated islands. Meanwhile, the lack of medical resources is one of the most serious problems afflicting these out-of-the-way places. Jichi Medical School was established in 1972 in order to provide and improve medical care in remote places, as well as to promote social welfare among local residents. The school produces more than 100 young doctors every year. To date, some 2,000 alumni have worked as doctors in remote areas throughout Japan.
