摘要

The critically endangered wax palm Ceroxylon sasaimae was previously known only from adult palms surviving in agricultural areas on the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. A wild population has been discovered in a forest fragment on the Central Cordillera, 144 km northwest of its known locality, and across the deep Magdalena river valley. The genus Ceroxylon is a characteristic element of the Andean mountains and includes the world's tallest palm, Ceroxylon quindiuense, growing up to 60 m tall, and thepalm thriving at the highest elevation, Ceroxylon parviffons, which occurs at altitudes up to 3500 m in Ecuador (Borchsenius & Moraes 2006).
