Study question The aim of this study was to develop waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) percentiles from a nationally representative sample, of 6- to 13-year-old Swiss children. Summary answer These first WC and WHtR percentiles may be useful for clinical and epidemiological use in Switzerland until official, validated references become available. What is known and what this paper adds Central obesity, measured as waist circumference (WC), is already known to be an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease and diabetes in children. The WHtR is a further indicator for body shape. International reference values to categorize children at risk, however, exist for neither of the two measures and there are no references specific to Switzerland.
