A year ago, many analysts were predicting a collapse in the North American OSB market in 2004. We disagreed with these negative forecasts and predicted "record OSB and plywood markets in 2004 and well into 2005". (PaperTree Letter, February 2004). Thestatistics are in for 2004, and it was a record year for structural panel production and demand in North America, with Oriented Strandboard (OSB) production up 7.3% from 2003 levels. Canadian OSB production was up 10.6%, with operating rates hitting 98.4%. Meanwhile, softwood plywood production, which represented 40% of total structural panel production in 2004, was up only a meager 0.6%, with U.S. plywood production actually dropping in 2004. With plywood production still representing 40% of total North American structural panel production, analysts cannot focus entirely on OSB supply and demand.
