摘要

In the 35 years since Canada decided to unleash its currency from the U.S. dollar, the dominant trend in the loonie has been downward. In the immediate aftermath of the float, the Canadian dollar actually rose to a peak of 1.04 U.S. dollar per Canadian dollar (we use this convention throughout this article) by May 1974. From there it subsequently embarked on a long-term decline that culminated in a low of 62 cents in early 2002. And while most Canadians may have winced as their currency was derided as the "dollarette" or the "northern peso," Canada's forest products producers usually smiled wryly in the knowledge that the loonie's weakness was conferring a competitive advantage versus its foreign competitors, particularly those in the U.S.
