It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that high newsprint prices are contributing to a historic decline in U.S. consumption. What is far less sure is whether there is any price low enough to head off publishers' conservation efforts but not so lowit drives much of the newsprint industry into bankruptcy. In fact, reversing the direction of pricing would be suicidal for paper mills. Producers should consider slowing down the pace of increases, for their own good, but they should not expect that doing so would stop the conservation measures that have been put in place. As it relates to the print product, "shrinking their way to greatness" seems to be the strategy of much of the newspaper industry (as it is, in their own way, of the mills).
