The 2007 pecan season in Texas will be one of the largest of all times. The 2006 production was a very short crop and the December and January weather has been great. Texas pecans have needed a long cold winter for many years. The soil moisture-holding capacity will be full before growth starts. The 400-hour winter chilling requirement will have been met with lots of cold to spare. Hopefully, we will not have serious ice damage to major limbs in any orchard in the state, but this is too early to tell. As pecan growers enter a new year, it is good to look at the total season and develop plans. We may stay as in the past or we may change. Since the 2006 crop was short, the April nitrogen application can be omitted on large trees. However, the May nutset should prove to be very high and nitrogen, zinc and irrigation will be needed at their maximum rates. All mature pecan trees will need nut thinning via trunk shaking in July and early August if the crop is big. Here is a review for developing your 2007 orchard plan.
