One of the fundamental aspects of agriculture, including growing pecans, is also a factor that is often taken for granted — the soil. The importance of good soil for pecan production cannot be overstated. Texas nurseryman O.S. Gray understood this and, I believe, put it best by emphasizing, "No pecan orchard can possibly be any better than the soil on which it is planted." Pecans are grown on a wide range of soil types. There are at least 31 different upland soil series and 24 different valley landsoil series on which pecans are grown. Obviously, this presents a wide variation in soil type and, of course, some will be more productive for pecans than others.
