Fifty-nine names have been used for species of terrestrial flatworms (Tricladida: Terricola) found in New Zealand. These are distributed among the endemic genera Coleocephalus and Newzealandia, and genera shared with at least Australia: Artioposthia, Australopacifica, Australoplana and Caenoplana. There are also at least six introduced species, including Parakontikia spp. (2), Rhynchodemus sylvaticus and Bipalium kewense. Present collections indicate a fauna in excess of 100 species. A massive rearrangement of the known described and undescribed species is needed and up to 6 species groups may require new genera. The two key Australasian species present in pastures and gardens in the British Isles require name or combination changes. In New Zealand, sites which contain 3 to 8 species are common, the greatest number being 18 species in a high-rainfall Nothofagus forest. This site is close to 'Jacksons', the type locality of many of Dendy's species, and through variation in them, it is proving difficult to assign his names to present material. Alpine (3 months snow cover) species are known. Many species occupy much modified habitats and are potential 'exports'.
