CONVENTIONAL' SUPERCONDUCTIVITY: A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT

The success of the BCS theory of superconductivity [1], supplemented with electron phonon dynamics [2] to explain detailed experimental data, has been well documented over the last several decades [3-5], including a recent review co-authored by the present author [6], and a companion article in this issue [7]. There are two levels of understanding; the first is associated with the so-called "pairing formalism" [81,which has innumerable successes documented in the cited reviews and elsewhere, not least of which is the presence of "Case II coherence factors" [9], spectacularly confirmed in early NMR and electromagnetic absorption experiments. The second level is with respect to mechanism; the overwhelmingly prevailing view is that the electron-phonon interaction is responsible for superconductivity in conventional superconductors. For example, the sophisticated explanation and understanding of tunneling data in Pb is held aloft as the quintessential experiment to 'prove' electron-phonon mediated superconductivity [10]. The purpose of this article is to raise some possible difficulties with our understanding of mechanism, notwithstanding the decades of supportive research just referred to.
