At its fourth official meeting,the Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPRC)last week voted in Geneva to continue the process that could lead to endosulfan being listed among chemicals the convention's signatories seek to restrict or eliminate.The European Union,which has banned endosulfan,submitted the chemical for inclusion in Annexes A,B or C.In its submission,the EU said the organochlorine pesticide is very toxic for nearly all kinds of organisms,causing endocrine disruption,neurotoxicity,hematological effects and kidney toxicity,and it's likely,as a result of its long-range environmental transport,"to lead to significant adverse human health and environmental effects such that global action is warranted."
