A Natural Resources Defense Council attorney last week told a congressional subcommittee that FDA should set a standard for di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in bottled water. Mae Wu testified during a Sept. 10 hearing on the regulation of bottled water. She told the Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Transportation Safety, Infrastructure Security and Water Quality that DEHP - an endocrine disrupter that interferes with testosterone production and is linked to a number of adverse health effects - is used in the gaskets that seal plastic caps on water bottles and may migrate into the water.
