Brussels—The European Commission has approved under the European Union Merger Regulation the acquisition of Dow Chemical's polypropylene (PP) business by Braskem for $340-million (PCN, 1 Aug 2011, p 1). The transaction, which will increase Braskem's U.S. PP capacity by 50%, involves Dow's Schkopau and Wesseling, Germany, PP plants, having a total capacity of 545,000 t/y, and PP plants in Freeport and Seadrift, Texas, with a combined capacity of 505,000 t/y. Also included are inventory, business know-how, certain product and process technology and customer contracts and lists.
