San Ramon-Chevron and Weyerhaeuser Co. have created a 50-50 joint venture, Catch-light Energy LLC, to focus on developing the "next generation" of renewable fuels from nonfood sources. The two companies will contribute funding, background technology and employees to Catchlight, which will research and develop technology to convert cellulose-based biomass into cost-effective, low-carbon biofuels.
