When staff at CERN threaded thefirst protons around the Large Had-ron Collider (LHC) on 10 Septemberlast year, the world watched in awe atthe prospect of particles being col-lided at unprecedented energies. Butthen progress stalled dramatically on19 September when a poor connec-tion between two superconductingmagnet cables disintegrated whilecarrying a test current of 8.7 kA. Theincident, which produced an elec-trical arc that breached the collider'sliquid-helium cooling system, hasmeant that 53 magnets have had to berepaired at a cost of about e20m.
