Researchers in Germany have created the firstorganic light-emitting diode (LED) that is moreefficientthan conventional lighting. Most organicLEDs consist of a diode surrounded by phosphorlayers that convert monochromatic light into eitherred, green or blue. But by bringing the phosphorinto the emission layer, significantly more photonscan leave the LED, which can lead to a powerefficiency of 90 lumens per watt compared withthe 60-70 lumens per watt of standardfluorescent tubes. Further tweaking could yield amaximum of 124 lumens per watt, say theresearchers (Nature 459 234-238).
