Travelling out of central Ankara, the busy downtown streets of Turkey's capital slowly make way for wide expanses of mainly agricultural farm land. As we leave the main motorway heading for the Kazan region - lying some 40 km north-west of Ankara-the road gradually turns more earthy and dusty. Eventually we arrive at a 42 hectare campus belonging to the Sarayky Nuclear Research and Training Center (SANAEM) - the research and training arm of the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK) - where a brand-new scientific facility is emerging, designed to produce copious amounts of radioiso-topes for medical use.
