摘要

Richard Feynman, in one of his famousrants, evoked as a metaphor what he called"cargo-cult science". During the SecondWorld War, the indigenous people of theSouth Pacific became accustomed to US AirForce planes landing on their islands, invari-ably bringing a profusion of desirable goodsand tasty foods. When the war ended, theywere distressed by the discontinuation ofthis popular service. So, they decided to takeaction. They cleared elongated patches ofland to make them look like runways. Theylit wood fires where they had seen electricfloodlights guiding in the planes. They builta wooden shack and made a man sit insidewith two halves of a coconut on each ear andbamboo bars sticking out like antennas: hewas the "air controller". And they waited forthe planes to return.
