When the OPERA collaboration announced on 23 September that it had observed neutrinos apparently travelling faster than the speed of light on their journey from the CERN particle-physics lab near Geneva to the Gran Sasso underground lab in central Italy, the announcement made headlines around the world. The result appears to contradict Einstein’s special theory of relativity, a cornerstone of modern physics, and has led to dozens of papers by other physicists, either attempting to point out where the OPERA researchers have gone wrong or speculating on the theoretical implications of the result.
