FLOATING in the vast, open spaces between the stars are giant clouds of cold gas. Composed mainly of hydrogen molecules and tiny grains of dust, these interstellar clouds are the breeding ground where new stars are born. The clouds have been the focus of much attention in astronomy, but until the 1970s no-one had suspected their sheer chemical richness. Chemical physi-many different molecules and radicals. These ranged from simple diatomics, such as carbon monoxide (CO), to more complex molecules, notably methariol (CH3OH) and ethanpl (C2H5OH).
