The room-temperature IR reflectance between 50 and 800 cm(-1) of ceramic Bi2-xPbxSr2CaCu2O8+8 is reported for x = 0 and 0.2, varying oxygen stoichiometry and for stage 1 iodine intercalation. The observed softening of the cation modes with oxygen desorption is consistent with the observed increase in the c-axis cell parameter. In contrast the high-frequency mode at 590 cm(-1), which is ascribed to oxygen-atom motion, hardens with oxygen desorption. This shift is probably dominated by the direct effect of sorbed oxygen on the dynamics of the O(3) atom in the BiO sheets rather than by structural changes associated with charge transfer to the CuO planes. Iodine intercalation produces a large change in the IR reflectivity spectra with the disappearance of modes below about 300 cm(-1), the apparent merging of the modes at 300 and 350 cm(-1) into a broad mode near 315 cm(-1), and a reduction in the background reflectivity. It is concluded that the lattice disorder induced by iodine intercalation, observed by TEM, results in the low-frequency modes being broadened to the point where they are indistinguishable from the background reflectivity.
