On the basis of successful fabrication of multilayer structures incorporating NdBa2Cu3O7-delta (NBCO) and Sr2AlTaO6 (SAT) insulator layers, we have systematically investigated the effect of post-annealing process on the superconducting properties of multilayers. All-epitaxial structures with sharp interfaces of SAT/NBCO multilayers were verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. Due to the high stability and crystallinity of SAT insulator layers oxygen diffusion through these layers into the bottom NBCO layers became difficult. Thus, post-annealing experiments for bilayers were carried out in an oxygen atmosphere at different temperatures and for different time periods to optimize the superconducting properties of the bottom NBCO layers. It was found that the superconducting properties of bottom NBCO layers in naturally cooled as-grown bilayers were quite poor due to oxygen deficiency. The transition temperature T-c measured by a SQUID magnetometer was only 50-60 K. At the optimum annealing temperature of 450 degrees C, as the annealing lime is increased, the T-c also increased. After annealing for 5 h, the T-c reached a nearly saturated value of 90.5 K. From the measured magnetization hysteresis loop for an SAT/NBCO bilayer, the calculated critical current density was 2.8 x 10(6) A/cm(2) at 77 K and the applied magnetic field of H = 100 G. These values were comparable to those of NBCO single layers deposited on La-Sr2AlTaO6 and SrTiO3 (100) substrates. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. [References: 12]
