摘要

This thesis explores the impact of life histories on the attitudes andexperiences of Black women officers. In-depth, personal interviews with fifteen women officers, concentrating heavily on life histories, were the major source of data. Literature and studies concentrating on military Black women are few and limited in scope. This thesis attempts to unveil the importance of understanding the experiences of Black female officers. This thesis includes an examination of the reproduction of racism in our society, the military, and civilian organizations; a look at the role of the Black female in and out of her own culture, the social forces influencing her everyday experiences in and out of the military; and the identification of the structures and practices that have maintained and promoted a bias of attitude and action in society and the military. The interview protocol explanation establishes the methodology used to obtain six major themes from the analysis of data. The conclusion provides recommended actions to uncover and eliminate potential racial and gender bias in the military services. Social construction, Black women officers, Race and gender.
