摘要

A plant materials report on Japanese millet (Echinochloa crusgalli var. frumentacea) is provided as Section 7.1.6 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The report was prepared as a guide to assist the project biologist with the selection, cultivation, and management of suitable plant materials for wildlife and habitat development program. major topics discussed are description, distribution, habitat requirements, wildlife values, establishment, management, and cautions and limitations. Japanese millet is an introduced, annual, warm season grass that s an improved variety of wild millet (E. crusgalli). It can be grown throughout the United States and has been widely planted to develop waterfowl feeding areas. The characteristic, distribution, and habitat requirements of this species are described, and its value to wildlife is discussed Guidelines for the establishment of Japanese millet include specifications for site selection, plot design, and seeding. Criteria are provided for the management of water levels consistent with maximum plant growth and seed production.
