Monomol. films of poly(5, 7-dodecadiyn-1, 12-diyl bis(butoxycarbonylmethurethane) (I) at the air-water interface differ dramatically from those of its monomer in their surface pressure (pi) vs. area per residue (A) isotherms, with only the isotherm of I under-going both a first-order phase transition and a simultaneous conformational change upon compression. The (pi) vs. A isotherm of I shows the distinct horizontal plateau characteristic of a 2-phase, 1st-order transition. Visible spectra typical of the CHCl3 soln. yellow coil form of I are seen for films transferred at areas/residue in excess of the onset of the plateau. Spectra characteristic of the PhMe soln. red-rod forms are obsd. at the other end of the plateau while spectra characteristic of a mixt. of both yellow-coil and red-rod forms are seen for films transferred at compressions corresponding to points within the plateau. I isotherms show a neg. temp. dependence, indicating that the net transition is endothermic in nature.
