This thesis demonstrates the potential use of microcomputer digital image processing techniques for obtaining tactical terrain data from LANDSAT multispectral digital imagery. Militarily significant Level I and II land cover classes were mapped for three North Carolina study areas using a modified USGS land cover classification system, LANDSAT 4 Thematic Mapper data, and the Personal Image Processing System (APPLEPIPS). A site specific accuracy assessment technique, using a stratified, systematic, unaligned sampling design, was used to determine the classification accuracy of the three land cover maps. The classification accuracy was determined to meet the USGS minimum acceptable standard of 85 percent at the 0.05 confidence level.
