摘要

The study examined the physicians's perception of the professional nurse role and what possible causes could lead to a nursing shortage. Through a literature review and a physician questionnaire, critical relationships between the physician and the nurse indicate that nurses perceive an underutilization and a lack of job prestige or respect. The study concludes that physicians recognize inherent differences in licensure programs for a registered nurse and that the perceptions of a nurse is as a handmaiden and not as part of the clinical decision making process. The study suggests a better definition of nursing capabilities and an orientation for the physician and the nurse in how the nurse's contributions can assist the physician.
