摘要

The process industries are a major consumer of energy. This project was concerned with the development of design strategies and operating policies for the improvement of energy efficiency and productivity in the process industries. In particular, the design and operation of resilient processing systems and the operation of complex processing systems was investigated. Major emphasis was placed on those parts of the process which often determine energy consumption and efficiency, i.e., the energy management system, distillation separations, and chemical reactors. Fundamental and immediately applicable results were obtained. The theoretical developments were tested experimentally. These experiments allowed us not only to improve our theoretical work, but they also represented real-life demonstrations of the effectiveness of the methods and of the feasibility of implementing them in an industrial environment.
