In order to investigate the influence of the shell structure on the moment of inertia, expressions for the averaged moment of inertia and the shell contribution are proposed. By numerical calculations the plateau condition, which justifies the pro¬posed partition, is shown to be fulfilled. Both types of the moment of inertia are cal¬culated as a function of the particle num¬ber and the deformation and are compared with the rigid body value of the moment of inertia and that of a heated nucleus. The order of magnitude of the shell effects at the equilibrium deformation is investigated and some situations, in which these effects are expected to be large, are suggested.
