Measurements of the angular dependence of the zero order SH wave velocity have been made in several rolled thin plate samples (approx. 1 mm) of aluminum, stainless steel, copper and brass. In each case the velocities for waves propagating along the rolling direction and transverse direction are the same to within experimental error despite the generally high levels of texture present in the samples studied. This supports the use of such an approach as a valid basis for a residual stress measurement technique. A texture model is proposed which predicts the variation of ultrasonic velocity with texture for a given material. The experimental results are found to be in agreement with the proposed model.
