The purpose of the guidebook is to present the results of recent research on the geology of Lower Pennsylvanian rocks in the Illinois and Central Appalachian Basins. The guidebook was prepared for the Geological Society of America Coal Geology Division field trip for the 1989 Annual Meeting in St. Louis. The preparation of this field trip and guidebook was a cooperative effort of the Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana Geological Surveys. The guidebook reflects the great interest in the origin of Lower Pennsylvanian strata represented by the Lee and Caseyville Formations of the Central Appalachian and Illinois Basins. There are two distinct parts to this field trip. Part one is a field excursion that explores the sedimentology of several outstanding exposures of Lower Pennsylvanian rocks on the western side of the Central Appalachian Basin. Part two is a field conference on the Illinois Basin.
