In the United States approximately 1% of the country's total energy supply is consumed by the cement industry in the manufacture of portland cement. In terms of energy consumption,the pyro-processing stage accounts for about 80% of the total energy required. This report discusses progress made during the first six months after the award of a grant to study the effects of fluxes and mineralizers in lowering cement kiln temperatures. The approach followed in this first year of the program is to study the influence of selected compounds on the kinetics and mechanism of formation of cement clinker minerals in the system CaO-Al2O3-Fe2O3-SiO2,particularly that of tricalcium silicate (C3S, alite),the most important component of portland cements. Its rate of formation is accelerated by the presence of high-temperature liquid phase (melt) and,thus,the temperature of melt formation in the presence of fluxes/mineralizers is of special interest.
