摘要

Unmet research needs concerned with fertilizer usage to increase food production in the United States were evaluated by a panel of soil scientists. Both research needed to improve efficiency of present production and research that should result in increased food production were considered. The following research priorities were established: (1) Improved fertilizer nitrogen recommendations through research on methods to predict the soil supply of nitrogen to growing crops; (2) improvements in fertilizer nitrogen use efficiency to maximize gains in crop production; (3) improvements in utilization of nitrogen in animal manures; (4) improvements in procedures to assess the phosphorus and potassium status of soils; (5) Evaluation of the use of fertilizers to improve food and feed crops as sources of dietary minerals; (6) improvements in soil and foliar application of fertilizers on high value crops for high yields and efficient fertilizer use;and (7) development of research to take advantage of other practices to increase food crop yields.
