Today the Chesapeake Bay is at a turning point. A key part of the region's heritage and economy, agriculture, is also the largest single source of pollution into the Bay, and current efforts to correct these problems are underfunded and poorly coordinated. Forests, nature's own pollution control system, are disappearing at the rate of 100 acres a day. Meanwhile, population in the watershed has grown to 16 million residents, increasing nutrients from wastewater treatment facilities and adding new shopping centers, highways and housing developments. The resulting runoff of nutrients and sediment has polluted the Bay's waters and damaged its ecosystem. Simply put, restoration efforts are being overtaken by current trends. To save the Chesapeake, we must act now and act boldly. A major financial investment is needed, coupled with improved coordination of the restoration effort on a watershed-wide scale. Finally, we must secure a permanent source of funding for the restoration to be successful over time.
