摘要

This report describes the natural and human factors that are believed to controlor have a large-scale or regional influence on the current (1996) water quality of the Puget Sound Basin. This information defines the environmental setting of the study unit and is collected and evaluated as the first step in designing and conducting a multidisciplinary water-quality assessment of the basin. The report describes the natural factors of physiography, bedrock geology, soils, climate, and hydrology that largely determine the natural background quality of water and the cultural factors of population, land and water use, and waste-management practices that largely define the human influence on water quality. The report further summarizes the results of selected water-quality studies and provides an overview of existing water-quality conditions in the Puget Sound Basin.
