This report provides national estimates of health status, access to care, and use of health services by residents in rural areas compared to that of persons in urban areas. Rural residents are defined as persons living in nonmetropolitan counties with under 20,000 population. This population experiences higher levels of poverty and poorer health and functional status even among the younger age groups. Rural residents average fewer physician contacts per year and have lower annual expenditures. The data also suggest poorer access to services and a lower availability of pediatric specialists.
