Potential annual energy savings resulting fromwindow shading devices on three prototypicalAustin, Texas, single-family residences werecomputed in this study. Savings were calculatedfor interior (shades, blinds, draperies, windowfilm, and tinted windows) and exterior (solarscreens, awnings, overhangs, and the effects ofrecessed windows and vegetation) shading devices.The analysis was conducted with the DOE-2building energy analysis computer program. Nominalbaseline cases (single glazing, gas heating, andnominal shading from eaves and neighboringbuildings) were run for each prototype. Selectedbaseline variants (double glazing, all electric,and no eaves or neighbor shading) were run to testparameter sensitivity.Results are reported in terms of the annualheating and cooling energy use and energy cost,with each device in place, as compared to thebaseline cases. The devices are ranked in term ofenergy savings and energy coat savings. Anothersignificant result is the multiple-regressioncorrelation of annual heating and cooling energysavings with Shading Coefficient and U-value thatgeneralizes the performance of the shading devices.
