SUMMARY. — Shortly before the French Revolution, the Académie royale and the Société royale d'agriculture, from which the present Orléans Société d'agriculture, sciences, belles-lettres et arts stems, numbered several eminent scientists among their members. They contributed to a better understanding of fundamental, applied and economic aspects of the plant world. Personalities as diverse as Lavoisier, Duhamel du Monceau, Priestley, Senebier, priest Rozier, Parmentier and Dr Quesnay participated in the intellectual life of the généralité. Although they did not directly contribute to scientific progress, the two Orleanese societies played an important role in spreading new ideas. Their members were concerned with improving social and economic life. Undoubtedly, they endeavoured to carry out the program of the Enlightenment.
