The invention relates to a synthetic aperture radar method for remote sensing of the earth's surface (GR) via a radar device (1) on at least one flying object which moves in an azimuth direction (x) above the earth's surface (GR), wherein the radar device (1 ) transmits radar pulses (RP1, RP2) in the transmission mode and, in the reception mode, receives the radar returns of these radar pulses (RP1, RP2) reflected at the earth's surface (GR). Within the scope of the method according to the invention, first and second radar pulses (RP1, RP2) are alternately transmitted in transmission mode at successive transmission times, wherein a respective first radar pulse (RP1) has a first transmission polarization (H) and is emitted with a radiation pattern which emits a in the range direction (y), covering the radiation pattern of a respective second radar pulse having a second transmit polarization (V) different from the first transmit polarization (H). The radar returns of the first and second radar pulses (RP1, RP2) are received in receive mode in two receive polarizations, thereby forming first to fourth polarization channels (P1, P2, P3, P4). The received radar echoes are digitized and, by means of digital beamforming, a plurality of raw SAR data sets (DS1, DS2, DS3, DS4) are determined from the received radar echoes in such a way that data for different polarimetric operating modes is obtained.
