A data structure for use as a positive list (20) in a device,comprising an entry for each permitted communication partner of the device having -a first identifier (IDl) that explicitly identifies the communication partner, -a value of a predetermined certificate field (ZAl) that identifies a certificate as explicitly associated with the communication partner, and -a respective check value (Pl) from at least one certificate (Zl) of a communication partner that explicitly identifies the certificate (Zl). A method for updating the positive list (20) for certificates from permitted communication partners of a device comprises the method steps of: receiving a new certificate (Znl) from a communication partner in the device, checking whether the positive an identifier (IDl) of the list (20) has an entry having communication value of a predetermined certificate field new certificate (Zln), and partner and a( ZAl) from the including a new check value (Pln), which explicitly -identifies the new certificate (Zln), in the positive list (20) if the check on the positive list (20) has yielded a positive result.
