A method for producing chitin and chitosan from green mussel (Perna viridis) shell comprising the steps of: cleaning green bay mussel shells thoroughly with distilled water; drying said green bay mussel shells in a controlled dryer at 35-40oC 'for 1 hour; pulverizing said dried green bay mussel shells until powder consistency using a pulverizer with 2mm mesh screen; soaking said powdered green bay mussel shells with 8 pcnt hydrochloric acid (1:12 w/v) for 1 hour at room temperature; straining said powdered green mussel shells from the solution using a filter funnel; washing said powdered green mussel shells with distilled water until a neutral pH is obtained; straining said washed powdered green bay mussel shells using a filter funnel to remove excess water; heating said powdered green bay mussel with 8 pcnt sodium hydroxide solution at 80-100oC in boiling water bath until dried to produce chitin; washing said chitin with distilled water until a neutral pH is obtained; drying said chitin under the heat of the sun for two (2) hours; bleaching said chitin with 3 pcnt sodium hypochlorite solution for 5 minutes; washing said chitin with distilled water; straining said chitin using a filter funnel to remove excess water; drying said chitin under the heat of the sun for two (2) hours; heating said chitin with 50 pcnt sodium hydroxide (1:12 w/v) in boiling water bath until dried to produce chitosan; washing said chitosan with distilled water until neutral pH is obtained; drying said chitosan under the heat of the sun for one (1) hour.
