IEEE 802.15.4 IS A RELATIVELY NEW STANDARD UNIQUELY DESIGNED FOR LOW RATE WIRELESS PERSONAL AREA NETWORKS (LR-WPANS), WHICH FOCUS ON LOW COST, EFFICIENT ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND COMPLEXITY. THESE CHARACTERISTICS ARE VERY APPEALING FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK WHICH MAINLY USE IEEE 802.11 FOR ITS OPERATION. THE PRESENT INVENTION RELATES TO AN ENERGY-EFFICIENT IEEE 802.15.4-BASED MAC PROTOCOL OFFERING ENERGY-EFFICIENT MECHANISM BY IMPLEMENTING LOCAL SYNCHRONIZATION WITH PERIODIC LISTEN-SLEEP AND ADJUSTMENT OF THE ADAPTIVE DUTY CYCLE BASED ON THE TRAFFIC LOAD ON TOP OF THE IEEE 802.15.4 MAC PROTOCOL. SIMULATIONS EXECUTED SHOW PERFORMANCE AND ACCURACY OF THE ALGORITHM. COMPARED WITH THE STANDARD IEEE 802.15.4 PROTOCOL, THE RESULTS SHOW SIGNIFICANT PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS IN TERMS OF THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND REDUCED DELAYS.
