The invention relates mainly to a method for counting persons located with a scene in a field of view of a stereoscopic apparatus (1), characterized in that it comprises the following steps: generating a left image and a right image from two cameras (3) associated with optical systems (5), - producing images, called left and right rectified images, in which a point of the scene corresponds to pixels located on the same line of the rectified image left and right rectified image, - identify, for each pixel of an image, the corresponding pixel of the scene in the other image and deduce an image, called disparity image in which the value of each pixel corresponds to the difference in the same line between the rank of the corresponding pixels in the two images, and - calculate a gradient between each pixel of the image of the disparities and a pixel which precedes it on the same line, - detect a do nobody according to the calculated gradients and count the people thus detected.
