The present invention relates to a method for preparing gamma-aminobutyric acids from monosodium glutamate using lactobacillus strains or recombinant lactobacillus strains, and more specifically to a method for producing GABA from MSG by recombinant strains prepared by transforming lactobacillus strains or recombinant strains, wherein the lactobacillus strains have an ability to convert MSG into GABA and produce GABA and the recombinant strains are prepared by transforming glutamate decarboxylase to the lactobacillus strains. The lactobacillus strains or recombinant lactobacillus strains have an excellent ability to convert MSG into GABA and produce GABA, and therefore the method can be useful in a GABA production technology.
